Our Play Pals Preschool

Our therapeutic Play Pals Preschool is a comprehensive, evidence-based, and individualized preschool program that is grounded in the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and the verbal behavior approach. Play Pals serves children ages 3 through 5 with autism and related special needs. Our program strives to provide a responsive and nurturing learning environment in which children are motivated to learn and grow.

The overarching goal of the program is for children to acquire the skills necessary for inclusion in their district schools, independent living, and the development of meaningful social relationships.  We also strive to work collaboratively with each family to help each child learn, develop, and achieve their fullest potential.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is derived from the empirically-validated Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) (Sundberg, 2008) and the Preschool Life Skills curriculum (Hanley et al., 2007). Our curriculum and daily schedule provide children with ample opportunities to practice functional communication and language skills, social skills, fine and gross motor skills, pre-academic skills, and independent self-care skills. Children learn to express their curiosity, problem-solve, practice, and work together with others through activities based on play and hands-on participation.

Our program promotes effective and systematic assessment and we use evidence-based instructional strategies to identify, teach, and support these important skills. Skills are taught within the context of meaningful and motivating activities across the classroom curriculum. Data are collected daily to monitor child progress and instructional decisions are based on those data.

Our Play Pals Team

Our Play Pals program is staffed by our Lead Teacher and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs).  Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) directly supervise the lead teacher and all RBTs working in the program. Support services (e.g., speech therapy, occupational therapy, and social work) are provided in the classroom as needed and use activity-based instruction to enhance skill acquisition and generalization.
