Social Language Development, Social Skills, Friendship Development

Ages 7-11 (1st-5th grade)

Mission Completion is designed for children whose vocal communication is emerging and who use an alternative/augmentative communication device. Through engagement in modified activities and games that are tailored to children’s communication, attention and social skill level, participants will increase tolerance for peers and develop important basic social skills that promote success in group participation.

Specific group goals include turn taking, expressing likes and dislikes toward different activities, initiating and responding to greetings from peers, answering basic social questions, manding to peers, responding to peer demands, and making appropriate social comments.

This group is designed for children between the ages of 7 and 11 that are able to mand for at least five different items with an AAC device, demonstrate correspondence with requesting, are able to sit in a group for up to 10 minutes without engaging in elopement or other maladaptive behavior, and independently play at least one board and social game (Zingo, memory, tag, hide-and-seek).

KGH offers a wide assortment of motivating social groups for elementary students that address a wide variety of social challenges. All KGH groups involve objectively defined group goals, careful data collection, ongoing evaluation of individual progress, and consistent communication with families.
